New Swim Academy to inspire a generation of Colchester swimmers
The Club launched its new Swim Academy recently, hoping to build on the legacy of the London Olympics and inspire a generation of young swimmers in Colchester to make the transition to competitive swimming and develop a lifelong love of the sport.

The Academy is aimed at any local swimmers aged between 5 and 12 years old and is based at the Colchester Garrison swimming pool on Wednesday and Friday evenings. The sessions will be run over three 15 week terms each year, with short breaks over the Easter, Summer and Christmas holiday periods, and will be run by a team of 4 qualified Teachers/Coaches and 8 Teaching Assistants, led by newly appointed Academy Manager, Donna Cowan.

Donna, who is being assisted by the Club's Junior and Intermediate Coach Steph Young and Performance Coach Denise Young, has high expectations for the new Academy, "The main aspiration for us is to create a clear pathway into the competitive squads in the Club for younger swimmers. We have a huge pool of talent in Colchester, but it's quite disheartening when children come to the Club at 11 or 12 years old, as many have too much ground to make up on other swimmers of that age."

"We need to re-educate parents to get their children involved at a young age if they enjoy swimming. Our focus in the Swim Academy is on stroke technique and all of the basic skills that are needed in competitive swimming at a later stage. Our Club coaches then work on fitness and fine-tuning those skills for competitive swimming, as the swimmers make the transition to the main Club squad programme."

Local property company, Jackson & Co, have provided much needed sponsorship for the new academy and have been very supportive in terms of providing new t-shirts and swimming hats to help the children feel part of the Club.
